The tenth and final show in the Cyrk series ‘Pattern Compulsions’ curated for Resonance 104.4FM, is an exclusive mix by Lee Gamble…

Lee is a founding member of the UK-based CYRK collective and has curated/co-curated several Cyrk events. He has also produced and curated three radio series for London based radio station Resonance104.4FM and he continues to DJ. Lee has released his computer compositions on the Entr’acte label and has collaborated with composer John Wall and artists Yutaka Makino and Bryan Lewis Saunders.

Sour Deez said… “After years spent making the toughest computer music compositions around, Lee Gamble has recently surprised us by squeezing out a secret stream of wild, totally original dancefloor material that is part Actress, part Mr Fingers. His first EP of this style will soon be released on the exotic Alter Records. Home to such awe-inspiring talents as Hieroglyphic Being, Oneohtrix Point Never and Design A Wave, it’s totally justified company for a man of his talents…”

Go here for a free track ‘Plot Collapse Version’ from Lee Gamble via the Sour Deez Soundcoud page…

Uncut Magazine said… “As composers such as Florian Hecker have proved, it takes a lot of imaginiative programming to make a computer sound like a hoard of flies. Birmingham producer Lee Gamble has dedicated the best part of a decade to this kind of inscrutable number crunching, and with the fizzy blitz of a second album Join Extensions it’s clear one is encountering a distinctive voice in the field of digital synthesis…”

Lee Gamble said… “…The configuration of material (ex nihilo) via various digital synthesis methods, prompts further digital disfigurations and reconfigurations. What you then have left is often the detritus or debris of an idea. Phantasms of both my previous and current musical, pseudo-scientific and sculptural influences are manifest as new material abstractions, created from the digital blank canvas. This pure abstraction allows several interests to appear in the works simultaneously…”.

Just Outside said… “..I may well be missing something but I’m hearing too much flash, not enough sinew.”

Lee has also recently remixed a track for the widely acclaimed Patten Album ‘GLAQJO XAACSSO’. You can get that at the Patten Soundcloud page here, and has also recently contributed a track – “RCLL Regularity Propuls” to the ∆ICASEA compiled “Benefit Compilation For Japan”.

Lee’s track ‘Decode Parms UCK Dub’ will be released in January on the Zelphabet Compilation. 2012 will see Lee releasing his second full album and an EP on Alter records is scheduled for February, youtube preview below….

The ninth show in the Cyrk series ‘Pattern Compulsions’ curated for Resonance 104.4FM, is an exclusive mix by multidisciplinary artist Mark Fell.

Tune in to ResonanceFM104.4 tonight (Tuesday 06th December) at 23:00-24:00 G.M.T to hear the live stream. ResonanceFM is available on the London airways at 104.4FM – alternatively, www. streams are available here…

Mark is a multidisciplinary artist based in Sheffield (UK). After studying experimental film and video art at the local polytechnic he reverted to earlier interests in computational technology, music and synthetic sound. In 1998 he initiated a series of critically acclaimed releases, featuring both collaborative and solo works, on labels including Mille Plateaux, Line, Editions Mego, Raster Noton and Alku.

Although working in electronic and techno music traditions, Mark’s practice has become increasingly informed by non-European musics. This is evident in two recent linked works “Multistablity” and “UL8” which explore a number of unfamiliar timing and tuning systems. Uncut magazine called these “completely mind-blowing” and the Wire said these were “amazing”.

As well as recorded works Mark also produces installation pieces often using multispatial speaker technologies. His work in this area is characterized by ‘non illusion based’ approaches to surround sound environments. This methodology became prominent in a work commissioned by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (Vienna) in collaboration with Roc Jiménez de Cisneros in 2008. For this the two artists developed a 48 speaker piece that rejected complex three dimensional panning systems in favour of spatially static synthetic sound. Critically Mark’s work is informed by Western philosophy, especially the writings of Heidegger and Wittgenstein.

The eight show in the Cyrk series ‘Pattern Compulsions’ curated for Resonance 104.4FM, is an exclusive mix by Ali Wells aka Perc.

Tune in to ResonanceFM104.4 tonight (Tuesday 29th November) at 23:00-24:00 G.M.T to hear the live stream. ResonanceFM is available on the London airways at 104.4FM – alternatively, www. streams are available here…

Perc is one of electronic dance music’s reference points: an internationally touring DJ, label owner and one of the finest producers around. For London-based Perc, aka Ali Wells, his rise to prominence has seen him releasing atmospheric drone and premium techno since 2002. It was pretty clear that he was headed for good things when James Holden supported one of his early demos. As usual, Holden wasn’t wrong.

In 2007 things started to get seriously interesting when Perc was noticed by the taste making Kompakt records. With the release of “Up” to massive critical acclaim remix requests flooded in and Perc was invited by DJ Hell to remix “Buttersäure”. The result was an industrially fortified techno remix that sparked interest across the scene. Particularly for Adam Beyer who approached Perc to ask for a release on his Drumcode imprint. That year the brilliant “Sticklebrick” EP came out on Drumcode, which lead to another remix for a heavyweight, this time Trentemøller. By the end of 2007 Perc was rightly established at the forefront of global electronic music.

As a DJ, Perc has taken to the decks from Mexico to Japan and in seminal club like Berlin’s Berghain all across the world. His approach? Perc’s hard drive brims with tracks including his own productions and armfuls of tools. His sound? It’s a blend of the cream of current techno and choice selections from electronic music’s Birmingham and Detroit forefathers. When it comes to playing live Perc goes deep. He mixes purely his own productions both released and unreleased, reconfiguring them into driving sounds; drone becomes big room techno becomes broken-beat becomes groove. Perc creates DJ and live sets that are industrial landscapes optimized for the dance floor.

His label, Perc Trax, was started in 2004 as a way for Perc to release his own productions, but it’s organically evolved into much more than just that. Under Perc’s careful guidance it’s developed a cutting edge core roster of Sawf, Forward Strategy group, Perc, Donor / Truss with heavyweights like Samuli Kempi guesting. With parties in London, Miami, Glasgow, Mexico, it’s clear that there are people in every corner of the globe with an ear to the ground, listening for where the eclectic Perc Trax will go next.

2010 was a brilliant year for Perc, seeing the release of “Vertigo I & II” on Perc Trax, a 12” on CLR and “Monad V” on Stroboscopic Artefacts. His productions clearly stem from an amalgam of influences and a listen to Perc’s excellent CLR or RA podcast begins to prise the lid off these origins: early nineties drum and bass to British Hammer horror film aesthetics. The horror genre influence is felt in Perc’s approach, his releases and DJ sets are filled with tension and play with the audience’s expectations.

2011 can be described in two words ‘Wicker & Steel’ – the title of Perc’s debut album, released on Perc Trax in June and which has risen Perc to a new level of respect and recognition. Following launch parties in London, New York and Tokyo the album picked up plaudits from everything from the expected dance-press coverage to breaking into the UK national newspapers. Where next is the big decision for Perc now.

DMX KREW (Rephlex/Breakin) – 2 hour set!
FOOLS & RUSHMORE (Rhythm Talk)
LEE GAMBLE (Cyrk)
& THE SOUR DEEZ POSSE

10pm – 4am!
Free before 11, £5 after.

Incredibly prolific as a DJ, producer and label owner for the last 15 years, DMX KREW (aka EDMX or any of a dozen psuedonyms) personifies the Sour Deez lifestyle with his incomparable knowledge of all things electrifying. He’ll be playing a special 2 HOUR SET, so expect a huge range of tough, vintage dance styles and uninterrupted VIBES.

Joining him are two of London’s most original outfits about to get relentless attention – get in there early before the power goes to their heads!

FOOLS & RUSHMORE run Rhythm Talk and…well, if you haven’t heard of Rhythm Talk, then that’s only testament to their elusive powers. One of London’s best kept secrets (God knows how), their parties roam the dubiously-legal, crumbling nooks and crannies of London to deliver nights of pure Chicago and Detroit heat with secret guest headliners.

Meanwhile, after years spent making the toughest computer music compositions around, LEE GAMBLE has recently surprised us by squeezing out a secret stream of wild, totally original dancefloor material that is part Actress, part Mr Fingers. His first EP of this style will soon be released on the exotic Alter Records. Home to such awe-inspiring talents as Hieroglyphic Being, Oneohtrix Point Never and Design A Wave, it’s totally justified company for a man of his talents….

The seventh show in the Cyrk series ‘Pattern Compulsions’ curated for Resonance 104.4FM, is an exclusive mix by a pioneer of mutant music, Mark Stewart (Maffia, Pop Group)….

Tune in to ResonanceFM104.4 tonight (Tuesday 22nd November) at 23:00-24:00 G.M.T to hear the live stream. ResonanceFM is available on the London airways at 104.4FM – alternatively, www. streams are available here…

-

Mark Stewart and his first band The Pop Group blasted out of Bristol in 1979 with the wired, avant future-funk manifesto of their ’We Are All Prostitutes’ single and Y debut album, redirecting their punk energy into the political arena, supporting campaigns such as Stop SUS. Stewart’s blood-letting vocal torrents rode disembodied funk grooves and fearsome free jazz skronking, continuing into 1980’s For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? album. As punk and its post-punk derivative got more formularised, the Pop Group struck further out, before imploding, leaving Stewart to hitch up with Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound, probably the most cutting edge operation of that period, Stewart immersed himself in the sonic possibilities of dub reggae and mixing desk mayhem on 1982’s Jerusalem EP [which included the unsettling but still uncannily prescient future-funk of ‘Welcome To Liberty City’] and his first solo album, the following year’s Learning To Cope With Cowardice.

Stewart was also fixated with the early hiphop he heard in the States, bringing back goldust-like tapes of New York’s groundbreaking hip radio stations, typically going to the source and procuring the Sugarhill/Tommy Boy rhythm section to join his Maffia [and also become Tackhead]. His next three albums – 1985’s As The Veneer Of Democracy Starts To Fade, 1987’s Mark Stewart album and 1990’s Metatron – are regarded as epochal future-shocks, blueprinting industrial [Ministry kingpin Al Jorgensen and NIN’s Trent Reznor citing him as a major influence] and trip-hop [’Mark Stewart, he‘s my chaos‘, says Tricky]. The latter album saw him hijacking techno for another uniquely-personal flight which, by Stewart‘s idiosyncratic in-breeding process, manifested later that decade in cyber-punk and the work of former flat-mate Tricky, proto-dubstep another creation. [“Most dubstep kids, Burial and that, they love all that stuff me and Adrian were doing”].

After 1996’s Control Data, Stewart glanced back at his past achievements with 1998’s We Are All Prostitutes Pop Group compilation and soon after his 2008’s Edit album he was the subject of Toni Schiffer’s documentary, On/Off – Mark Stewart: From the Pop Group To The Maffia.

Reflecting now on an unmatchable track record of anarchic pioneering and seismic influence which prodded Nick Cave to declare, ‘Mark Stewart changed everything‘, he says, “I thought I was making funk music, but a track on Veneer Of Democracy supposedly inspired all the American industrialists, like Front line Assembly and Skinny Puppy, while another track supposedly inspired the Bristol kids. It happens all the time. I’ve got this nonchalance that nothing is sacred so I’ll crash a Slayer guitar line with Rotterdam gabba beats. For me, it’s like colours. I grew up doing montages; like I did this collage of Ronald Reagan’s head on this gay porno cowboy. In fact, I’ve never really grown up at all. I’m still trying to put round things into square holes.”

-

On the 25th November Mark releases a double A side 7″ – ‘Children Of The Revolution’ / ‘Nothing Is Sacred’ – Ultra-violently noisy and perfectly capturing the restless mood on today’s global streets from London to Libya, Children of the Revolution can be heard on Mark’s mix here for the first time. The album will be out early in 2012 and features a stellar cast including cult film-maker Kenneth Anger, original Clash/PiL guitarist Keith Levene, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Richard Hell, Gina Birch from the Raincoats, Tessa Pollitt from the Slits, all of Primal Scream amongst many others…

The sixth show in the Cyrk series ‘Pattern Compulsions’ curated for Resonance 104.4FM, is an exclusive mix by Dalglish..

Born in Edinburgh. Chris Douglas – aka O.S.T. / Rook Vallard / Dalglish grew up in San Francisco and began studying piano at age 8. Released first EP on Detroit based Switch Records in 1992. Founded Qlipothic Records in 1996. He has created a large body of work, a highly textured and confrontational take on traditional forms of electronic dance music.

With initial releases and early formative years spent in Detroit and San Francisco, he acquired several high profile fans such as Autechre who had him support their 2001 ‘Confield’ tour of North America, then later brought him to Europe to play their curated ATP festival, where he has remained since.

The digital only version of ‘Benacah Drann Deachd’, his latest release has been receiving some of his most eager reception to date, with a full page review in the June issue of the Wire:

“Chris Douglas haunts his own music. A nomad and something of a loner, he has rattled around the electronic music network like a busted component for the last decade and a half [...] It’s appropriate, because his music is one of the most striking evocations of the life of the mind that you’re ever likely to hear. The music is substantially live, improvised within a loose framework, and the shifting layers of grey-green tone, fractured samples and nervous tics that whip around the stereo field obsessively tease out new geometries and shapes ..” Derek Walmsley, The Wire
